Tobii Game Hub v3.0.1
Tobii Game Hub is an add-on to our Tobii Eye Tracking software and enables eye tracking and head tracking functionality in a selection of games. Get started
Tobii Experience
Tobii Experience is a companion app for Tobii eye trackers built for gaming, Tobii Aware, and Tobii Horizon enabled devices. You can find the list of games, apps, and features supported by your product and device in the app.
Tobii Eye Tracking
If you have a Tobii eye tracker built for gaming, you will use this app to configure your tracker and create your calibration profile in preparation for exploring head and eye tracking in gaming. Stream or record content with Tobii Ghost to show your viewers where your focus is and immerse yourself in over 150+ game titles by controlling the in-game camera with your head and eye movement. Or roll up your sleeves to start collecting game analytics to help you improve as a player. As a bonus, you also get access to a few selected Windows features created to reduce your power consumption, increase privacy, and more.
If you have a Tobii Aware-enabled device, you can find all the features available for your device in the app. Features developed to increase your privacy, productivity, digital wellbeing, and lower power consumption. Let it lower your screen’s brightness when your presence has not been detected, and turn up the brightness once detected again. It can keep your on-screen content private by blurring your whole screen when your attention is elsewhere or when your presence is not detected. If you set up a digital ID, it will only unblur for you, nobody else.
If you have a Tobii Horizon-enabled device, you can find all the 50+ game titles and apps compatible with your device in the app. Tobii Horizon captures and delivers real-time 6DoF head tracking by capturing head movement using the built-in web camera of your device. Gain a greater sense of having an extended field of view and increase your situational awareness by controlling the in-game camera with your head movement instead of entirely relying on hand-controlled input devices.
Note:
Download and install the Tobii Experience app to start exploring your product now.
Please note
Configuration, settings, features, branding, and visualizations will differ per product and device.
Some devices may include both Tobii Horizon and Tobii Aware features.
You need a compatible product and driver to install this application successfully.
If the driver for your product is missing, please visit your manufacturer’s website.
Tobii Eye Tracker
On Windows, you can use a Tobii Eye Tracker 5 or 4C to improve your eye- and head-tracking data.
Other Tobii trackers are NOT OFFICIALLY SUPPORTED OR TESTED.
These are special trackers you can attach to the bottom of your screen. They don’t do any facial feature tracking (like mouth, brows, etc.) but they can provide very accurate tracking of your head-position/rotation and eye-gaze-position on your screen.
IMPORTANT: If you use a Tobii 4C Tracker, you need to install the special beta driver version of Tobii Experience if you want to use head-tracking in addition to eye-tracking. For more info, check this page. This will also be described in more detail below.
How do I use it?
You can set up Tobii eye- and head-tracking on the following screen, only shown on Windows:
Make sure your Tobii eye-tracker is connected to your PC and works (outside of VTube Studio). To make sure that is the case, follow the setup guide provided by Tobii for the tracker, including installing all required drivers/software and properly calibrating the Tobii tracker.
For Tobii Eye Tracker 5
- Go to https://gaming.tobii.com/getstarted/
- Select «Tobii Eyetracking»
- Select «Tobii Eye Tracker 5»
- Click «Download Driver» and install it to install «Tobii Experience» .
- Run «Tobii Experience» to make sure it works well with your device and calibrate it.
For Tobii Eye Tracker 4C
For the Tobii 4C, head-tracking is not supported unless you use the beta driver. If you do that, you may lose some of the Tobii-Windows-Accessibility features.
If you don’t use the beta driver, you will only have eye-tracking available in VTube Studio.
- Go to https://gaming.tobii.com/getstarted/
- Select «Tobii Eyetracking»
- Select «Tobii Eye Tracker 4C»
- Select «Tobii Experience — beta only» , then click «Download Driver» and install it to install «Tobii Experience» . If you don’t want to install the beta driver, select «Tobii Eye Tracking Core Software» instead (but then you will not have head-tracking).
- Run «Tobii Experience» to make sure it works well with your device and calibrate it.
What can I do with it in VTube Studio?
VTube Studio can use the Tobii tracker to improve the head-tracking and eye-tracking coming from your webcam or iOS/Android device. Depending on the options you’ve turned on, it does the following:
- Overwrite iPhone/webcam head X/Y/Z position and rotation as long as the Tobii tracker detects the head.
- This position/rotation is very smooth and accurate. Most importantly, it does NOT have that annoying head-nod when you blink.
- If this is turned on, VTube Studio will also make sure the eyes will never fully close as long as the Tobii-tracker still detects your eyes. This solves the problem of eyes closing when you look down, for example on your keyboard or drawing tablet. This works well because the Tobii tracker is below your screen and very accurate, so it will be able to tell if the eyes are still open.
You can also visualize the gaze position. This position will be shown as white bubble/circle in the VTube Studio window. The coordinates for the gaze circle are the X/Y gaze coordinates within the screen the tracker is installed on, so the shown position will only be accurate if VTube Studio is on that screen and in fullscreen mode.
Can I use the Tobii tracker by itself without any other webcam/phone tracking?
That’s possible, but not recommended. The Tobii tracker does not support things like brow/mouth/etc. tracking so if you use the Tobii tracker by itself, you’re probably not going to get the general tracking quality you’re looking for.
I’ve got issues blinking/winking with my Tobii tracker
Make sure you haven’t accidentally set the tracker to only track one eye. You can do that in the Tobii Experience app.
If you have any questions that this manual doesn’t answer, please ask in the VTube Studio Discord !!
What Is Eye Tracking? A Basic Definition
Learn how eye tracking is used in mainstream cases like gaming and Windows Hello.
How does eye tracking work? And what does the popular eye tracking technology Tobii mean for common consumer uses, like gaming and Windows Hello?
Eye tracking technology follows a user’s point of gaze by keeping a record of the eyes’ positioning and movement. According to biometrics hardware and software vendor iMotions, eye tracking is done “in relation to the environment and is typically based on the optical tracking of corneal reflections, known as pupil center corneal reflection (PCCR).”
How does eye tracking work?
Eye tracking works by pointing a light (not infrared, but almost) at the pupil. This creates reflections at the cornea. An infrared (IR) camera tracks these reflections, thus tracking the movement of your point of gaze. The technology can tell the difference between your pupil and iris, since light will enter the pupil but bounce off the iris. Note that humans can not typically / easily see this almost-infrared light, so it isn’t a distraction to users.
For more information on how eye tracking works, check out the following infographic, shared courtesy of iMotions neuroscientist and lead product specialist Dr. Elvira Fischer.
What is Tobii eye tracking for gaming?
Tobii eye tracking is currently the most popular form of consumer eye tracking and particularly exciting for tech enthusiasts because it brings eye tracking to gaming.
Here’s how Tobii eye tracking works, in the company’s own words:
At the time of writing, there are currently 153 games that support Tobii eye tracking.
Tobii eye tracking offers various gaming features, which differ from title to title. The technology can provide Natural Targeting, like being able to select something, fire a weapon or aim with a look, Gaze Awareness, where the game’s display reacts based on what you’re looking at, and Infinite Screen, for extended views and quick head tracking in simulator games.
The current version of Tobii’s tech uses a second generation Tobii EyeChip. Compared to its predecessor, the Tobii EyeChip adds simultaneous eye and head tracking, lower power consumption and CPU load reduction. It also changed data transfer from 2 GBps to 100 KBps and added USB 3.0-to-USB 2.0 connectivity.
If you want to be able to use the eye tracking features in any of the 153 games that support Tobii’s technology, you have a couple options. Your first is buying Tobii’s eye tracking module. Today, Tobii replaced its Eye Tracker 4C with the Tobii Eye Tracker 5. You can attach the Eye Tracker 5 to your gaming laptop or monitor via the included USB 2.0 cable. The tracker has an MSRP of $229.
Alternatively, you can buy a gaming laptop with Tobii eye tracking built in. At the time of writing there are seven:
The Acer Predator XB271HUT gaming monitor was made with baked-in Tobii eye tracking, but it’s hard to find new.
Eye tracking and Windows Hello
With the Tobii eye tracker, you can also use Microsoft’s Windows Hello feature to log into a PC with your face. There is a small number of laptops with Windows Hello cameras built-in, but you can give any Windows PC this functionality but attaching a Tobii eye tracker, like the aforementioned Eye Tracker 5.
You can also get the same effect with a webcam with an IR camera, like the Logitech 4K Pro.
With the proper Tobii software, you can also control different Windows Interaction features. These include the ability to have your monitor’s brightness automatically dim when you’re not looking or turn on when it sees your eyes, control your mouse, select apps and more.
What else uses eye tracking?
A number of enterprises have been using eye tracking technology to get work done since way before it entered the consumer space. There is more heavy-duty eye tracking hardware available for these use cases, including for relevant content developers.
Naturally, eye tracking is being considered for use in various head-mounted displays (HMDs), like AR smart glasses and offerings looking to be the best VR headset for certain business-focused tasks and training. The former is primarily in development or targeting business use, while we’ve already seen the first VR examples in the HTC Vive Pro Eye and Pico Neo 2 Eye. Today, HP announced the upcoming HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition HMD, which will feature the Tobii EyeChip eye-tracking ASIC, along with other biometric sensors.
Last summer saw the debut of Tobii Spotlight Technology, which uses eye tracking to improve dynamic foveated rendering in VR headsets for a smoother overall experience. The Pro Eye and Neo 2 Eye already use the feature, and there’s hope for consumer uses too.
Oculus, Facebook’s VR company, has also told us that they’re exploring introducing eye tracking into its headsets and has shown off a prototype and secured a patent, so there’s another piece of hope for consumer VR eye tracking.
