8 Easy Ibis Paint X Customized Brushes WITH STEP-BY-STEP Tutorial

Hi guys! I want to start off everything with a simple post on tutorials on customizing your brushes on IbisPaint X (I’ll be calling it IP later on).

If you have visited my Pinterest account, you will notice that I have posted customized brushes for IP.

Just a short disclaimer, I AM NOT AN ARTIST. I am just sharing this idea with you, ’cause why not, right? I am the type of person who likes to give something without asking for anything in return (charot lang!). I am also the type of person who’ll receive whatever good intent people give me. Lol!

Now, let’s recreate those brushes for the sake of these tutorials. I will not include those I think are lame (I did post some weird ones, but I won’t let you see them here).

Here is the list of brushes in this very post to be tackled:

Without further delay, let’s jump right in!

1. Clouds

I will be using a 3 x 4 size to work on. You may choose whatever you want.

Let’s start with choosing the brush we will customize for better effect. For this one, let’s use Airbrush (Normal).

Click the arrow on the right.

You will see 7 tabs. Like the one attached below.

The first tab is Basic. And “basically,” it’s just the pattern opacity and the thickness of the brush. You can change that later on. Leave the blending mode as Normal.

The next tab is Fade. I will explain each of these if the public demands–since I’m doing this just for fun. If you haven’t made any changes to the original brush, just leave them be. But if you did, you can reset it in the last tab called Settings.

The third tab is Shape. This will be the most crucial part because the most significant change will happen here when customizing a brush. Follow carefully (or you can experiment on your own).

The brush pattern for the brush that I posted 12 days ago that got 7.39k impressions was Round Brush as of the time I am writing this. And take note, I only placed this on one board ! You may notice that the stats say zero outbound clicks, and that’s because there are no links attached.

But today, let’s try Watercolor (Bleed). Change the spacing to 10%, opacity to 15%, and leave everything else as is.

Now, let’s move on to the next tab, Jitter.

Set the following under the Jitter tab, leaving the unmentioned as-is:

• Jitter Position, 65%
• Jitter Opacity, 30%
• Jitter Spacing, 100%
• Jitter Angle, 100%
• Jitter Brightness, 20%

Okay, let’s move on. Under the Type tab, leave everything as is.

Under the Dynamic tab, I’d like to set everything as 100%. You may, however, do anything you want.

Then lastly, for the Settings, this is more of a tip than part of the tutorial:

It is essential to rename and export it so that you won’t lose it. After exporting, you can reset the brush to still use the original brush and use the customized one after importing the exported file.

Didn’t quite get that? Don’t worry; I’ll explain that in another post (I’ll link it here as soon as I post it).

Since I already did a lot of explaining on number one, I will just state which brush we’ll be using to start with and which parts will be changed for the rest below.

2. Chain

Let’s start by choosing the Digital Pen.
Click the arrow on the right.
Make sure to reset the brush first if you want to follow these instructions.

Increase thickness from the Basic Tab.
Change the Brush Pattern to Chain 4 (Color).
Change Spacing to 55%.
Turn Following Rotation, ON.
Rename the brush under the Settings Tab.

Leave all the unmentioned as is.

Here is the brush we just customized, a sample when used, and the QR Code when exported:

I made two pins on Pinterest. The following rotation of the first one that I posted wasn’t turned on. That’s why I made another one.

3. Hair

Let’s start by choosing Pen (Fade).
Click the arrow on the right.
Make sure to reset the brush first if you want to follow these instructions.

Increase the thickness so that you will see the difference when changing some parts.
Set the thickness of start and end to 0%.
Set the Blurring Shape (2nd tab) to Brush 04.
Set the following under the Blurring Section:

• Blurring Degree, 60%
• Blurring of Start, 60%
• Blurring of Middle, 20%
• Blurring of End, 20%
• Jitter Blurring, 60%

Leave the unmentioned as is.

Tip: Turn the Force Fade on. And the method to Real Time.

HAIR– this is the one I posted last month.

You can comment below which of the two brushes you prefer!

But if you ask me, I’d like the two combined! Why? Use the other one as highlight. You’ll get it if you import and compare both brushes.

4. Heart Brush

Choose Felt Tip Pen (Soft).

Let’s start from the third tab.
Change the Brush Pattern to Glitter Heart.
Change the Spacing to 150%
Change the Pattern Opacity to 100%

Let’s move onto the next tab.
Change the Jitter Position to 100%
Change all from Jitter Thickness to Jitter Angle to 20%
And just like before, leave all the other unmentioned as is.

5. 3D Brush

Let’s choose the Digital Pen.

Change the Brush Pattern to Beads.

That’s it for the 3D Brush! You don’t have to change anything else, but you can always explore for more.

6. Cherry Blossoms

Again, reset the Digital Pen.

Change the brush pattern to Cherry Blossom.

Change Spacing to 400%

Change Jitter Position to 400%.

Change Jitter Thickness to 100%.

Change Brush Type to Double.

Change the Body Color to a slightly lighter or darker color than that of your chosen brush.

Change Shadow Size to 40%.

Rename and Export your brush so that you can reset it again without losing the customized brush you just made

7. Braid

This is the same with how we customized the chain.

Let’s start by choosing the Digital Pen.
Click the arrow on the right.
Reset the brush first if you want to follow these instructions.

Turn Anti-aliasing, ON.

Increase thickness from the Basic Tab.

Change Thickness of Start to 125%.

Thickness of end to 30%.

Change the Brush Pattern to either of the four types shown below. For this tutorial, I’ll be using the Four Strand Braid.

Change Spacing to 55%.
Turn Following Rotation, ON. ( This is very important )
Rename the brush under the Settings Tab. Export.

8. Bubble

Click the right arrow beside the Pen (Fade).

Change the Brush Pattern to Blur Circle (Out).

Change the Spacing to 215%.

Change the Opacity to 100%.

Change Jitter Position to 140%.

Change Jitter Thickness to 70%.

Change Jitter Opacity and Jitter Spacing to 40%.

Change Brush Type to Water.

Set Color Mix to 10%.

Set Wetness to 20%.

Rename and Export.

This article mainly summarizes the best brushes in ibisPaint X.

There are so many types of ibisPaint X pens that I don’t know which one to use!

I think many people think so.

When I first used ibisPaint X, I didn’t know which pen was the easiest to use.

However, after using this digital tool for over a year, I’ve come to understand to some extent which pen is the best.

In this article, I’ll explain to you six of the best pens you can use for draft and line art!

Best Brushes for Drafts

First of all, I will introduce three pens recommended for drafts.

1. Texture pen
2. Pencil (Graphite)
3. Pencil (#1)

Texture pen

The Texture pen was also introduced as a recommended brush on the official YouTube of ibisPaint X.

I was influenced by the recommendation and tried using it, but I felt that it was a very easy-to-use pen as the official says.

I think the characteristic of the Texture pen is the softness.

It’s as if I’m reproducing the softness of a pencil.

I drew the thickness of the pen with 20px, 10px, and 10px with Force Fade turned on.

How to Use Stabilizer & Drawing Tool in ibisPaint X

It is written for those who want to know the basic use of ibisPaint X. I will explain the stabilizer and drawing tool, so anyone can use it easily!

Pencil (Graphite)

Next is the introduction of the Pencil (Graphite).

As it is called a pencil, this pen has a softness like a pencil.

However, it gives a sharper impression than the Texture pen.

I want to use a pencil that has a sharpness like a pen!

It is a recommended pen for those who say.

Pencil (#1)

Finally, I would like to introduce the Pencil (#1).

This pen is a bit like the Texture pen.

However, the Pencil (#1) is clearer.

The Texture pen looks too soft and blurry, so I want to use a pen that is a little clearer.

It is a recommended pen for those who think.

If you turn on Force Fade, it seems that there is not much difference between the three pens.

However, the difference is obvious with pens without Force Fade.

Saving these pens in «Custom» will help you use them later.

So, tap the plus button on the left side of the brush to save it as «Custom».

Best Brushes for Line Art

Now, from here, I will introduce three pens recommended for line art.

1. Dip Pen (Hard)
2. Dip Pen (Soft)
3. Genius Pen

First, the Dip Pen is the pen that appears at the beginning when you tap the brush screen.

Since it appears at the beginning, you can save the time of searching and it is also excellent as a pen.

Dip Pen (Hard)

The Dip Pen (Hard) is a convenient pen when you want to draw a clear line.

Also, if you turn on Force Fade, you can draw a line as if it were used by a professional manga artist.

Dip Pen (Soft)

On the other hand, the line of the Dip Pen (Soft) is softer than that of the hard pen.

I use this pen to draw fine lines such as hair and wrinkles on clothes.

It is good to draw with the same pen, but if you draw the mainline and the fine line separately, the line art will look beautiful.

Genius Pen

Finally, the Genius Pen has been featured on ibisPaint X’s official YouTube as well as the Texture pen.

And it’s an easy-to-use pen.

You can draw a slightly broken line like a pencil.

You can express softness differently from Dip Pen (Soft).

Dip Pen (Hard) and Genius Pen depend on your preference.

Also, I think that the pen used will differ depending on the type of illustration you draw.

I tried all the pens in ibisPaint X, but there wasn’t much difference in the pens that used both drafts and line art.

I think the characteristic pen is about Genius Pen.

There are other types of Dip Pen, and all pens are similar, so it doesn’t matter which pen you use.

However, the Dip Pen introduced this time was considered of ease of drawing and finding.

So, if you have trouble finding a pen that suits you, please use the Dip Pen (Hard) and (Soft), or the Genius Pen.
