Use Chrome Extensions on iOS [ The Way to Use Them]

Chrome Extensions are handy and great features to have on your iOS devices (iPad and iPhones) but sadly, you can’t have them directly. Apple doesn’t allow it and Google can’t or is yet to make it happen. And we probably would not have credible reasons for this.

The slightly good news is that, though you can’t install or download Chrome extensions on iOS devices, you can use them.

Why Chrome Extensions Are Not on iOS

Why Chrome Extensions Are Not on iOS?

One may wonder why Chrome extensions are not on iOS especially since Safari extensions are now fully functional. Apple and Google might never let us know why this is so. However, we can deduce three reasons why that is so.

1. Security Issues

Apple is big on protecting the privacy of its customers. Most Chrome extensions are built by third-party agents and Chrome can’t possibly control all they do. This is a security risk Apple already frowns at.

2. Revenue Sharing Risks

Chrome extensions, if allowed, will bypass Apple’s App store revenue system. Users only need to install Chrome and get to use extensions (which can be likened to a sub-app).

Apple has no control over and therefore can charge the developers when users make purchases. This revenue source is a big part of Apple’s business and they won’t just let it slide.

3. Less Control Over Users

Somehow, even though they like to say they don’t, Apple controls the kind of apps its users have access to. Allowing Chrome extensions is like opening a backdoor they won’t be able to oversee. They may cite privacy issues but it is just a way to make up for the gatekeeping of user freedom.

You should note that both companies in question, Apple and Google, haven’t openly given a reason why Chrome extensions are on iOS. The ones you just read are speculations and based on the known history of the companies. Till they give an official statement, we will only keep guessing.

To check the availability of your favorite extension, you can go to the app store and check. Currently, there are just a few listed on the App Store and there are no green signals for a "chrome Extensions Outbreak" on the app store.

How To Install Chrome Extensions on iPhone & iPad

In this guide, let us know how to install chrome extensions on iPhone and iPad. Chrome is a commonly used and popular browsing app on various device platforms. It is also available on iOS through the app store. However, Apple is quite strict when it comes to non-official applications.

The major restriction comes from denying running an extension by third-party apps. Installing the Chrome browser app from App Store is allowed, but integrating any extension with the browsing app is not allowed on iOS. Apple follows this to ensure maximum device security against possible malware attacks.

In today’s date, various web browser extensions are there, which are pretty helpful. They provide an engaging user experience by solving various problems. How does one install app extensions for the Chrome browser on iPhone? The solution comes from using Safari browser extensions on the chrome browser.

Let us check how to install the app extensions on the Safari browser. It is the native browser of Apple. Hence, the operating system will allow any extension to run on the iPhone.

Mind you that if you are running the latest iOS 16 on your iPhone, the steps will be a bit different. From Step 6, when the menu pops up after tapping the Share icon, scroll down until you see the extension name.

Also, not every extension will work with every app. For instance, I installed the app extension that enables PiP mode for YouTube videos. So, when I access any YouTube video via the Chrome browser, I can use the Safari extension to change a YouTube video to Picture-in-Picture mode.

There are a few exceptions though when it comes to using the Safari extension apps on Chrome. Certain extensions such as the ad blockers cannot be used on the web pages you access on the Chrome browser app. Most of the other extensions meant for the Safri browser do work on the Chrome browser, though.

If you use an Apple iPad, the above steps will also work just fine. You can install any app extension for Chrome for iPad by installing them through the App Store.

Wrapping Up

Often the primary app you use on your iPhone may not have many features. This is when the extension comes in handy to offer those missing features. While Apple is strict regarding the usage of app extensions, you can still install app extensions for Chrome through the App store Safari browser extensions.
