Follow the instructions here for installation; on first launch the extension will prompt you for the license key which you should have received after checkout in the store.

Creating a QR code in InDesign

Creating a QR code in InDesign works in four easy steps:

  1. Select the data content of the QR code: Text, URL, phone no., email address, VCard, Wifi access data
  2. Set the color and style of the code and the finder patterns; set the ECC (error correction) level
  3. Embed a logo or image by dragging it over the QR code (optional)
  4. Set the size of the code, then add the QR code to your Illustrator artwork

Let’s look at those steps in more detail. Shown is the extension’s panel with the default settings:

Plain text, e.g «QR Text»

URL, e.g. «https://example.com»

Email address, e.g. «mailto:info@example.com»

Phone number, e.g. «tel:+18005551234»

SMS number, e.g. «smsto:44044»

Wifi access data, with SSID, encryption method and password

The extension will format the data according to this specification, e.g.:

WIFI:S:My Network;T:WPA;P:My Password;;

The password is optional. This post has more on creating QR codes with Wlan access data

VCard / business card, with name, address, contact data etc.

Last name and first name are mandatory; all other fields are optional. The extension will format the data according to VCard Version 3 specs.

More on VCard data

With VCard content type selected, you can enter all relevant data manually. However, it’s much faster to simply drag a VCF file with contact data over the panel, like so (note the highlight green frame):

This will automatically fill in all the data. This post has more on VCF files and creating QR codes with VCard & business card data.

Data input

Set styles and colors of the QR code

The extension lets you choose between four different shapes and two different styles for the dots. Click the color wells to select colors or type a color name, e.g. «green», into the edit field. You can also paste HEX codes into the field (e.g. «#FF0000» for red) and update the color with <Enter>.

Make sure to select colors that provide some contrast between the background and the code. Avoid very light colors as they can reduce the readability of the code.

Per default the code has a white background. As an additional option, you can create the code with a transparent background, this is useful if you want to place the barcode on an existing document, e.g. a book cover or packaging. Again, make sure to have contrasty color combinations. Do not create «inverted» codes (e.g. yellow on a black background) as most barcode reader apps won’t scan such codes.

Note: The three finder patterns in the corners of the QR code are always drawn solid to ensure that the code will scan properly.

Setting the size of the QR code

Setting the error correction level (ECC) of the QR code

Adding an image or logo to the QR code in InDesign

One outstanding feature of QR is the very capable error correction. When set to the highest level, even codes where 30% of the area are missing or damaged can still be recognized. This can be exploited for so called «vanity codes» by overlaying a company logo or icon or other imagery over the code.

To add an image, simply drag it from the desktop or the file manager over the preview; note the highlighting:

  • Always use ECC settings «High» or «Best» for maximum protection
  • Although the code is verified with the built-in reader, always test the final code against a variety of online and offline reader apps, see last section in the manual

By default the image is centered within the QR code. Use the arrow buttons above the preview to change the position of the image. Adjust the size with the slider, delete the image with the » x «-button.

Tip: If you want to embed your logo later, simply use a white square as an image and adjust it to the proper size. This will leave an empty space in the center of the code where you can then place your artwork.

Add QR code to InDesign

Once the preview is updated and shows a valid barcode, click «Insert QR Code» to add the QR code to your InDesign document. The barcode will be added to the current page of the currently active document, with the top left corner of the barcode element at the center of the page.

Do not scale or stretch the barcode after it was placed as this may render the code unusable. If the code has the wrong size, simply delete it and create a new one.

Tip 1: To prevent accidental changes, select and right-click the barcode on the page and choose Lock from the context menu.

Tip 2: When the barcode is displayed blocky like a low-res image, adjust the display settings in View > Display Performance. Alternatively, activate View > Overprint Preview.

Verifying the QR code in InDesign

The extension comes with its own integrated QR reader to verify the code. This is especially useful if you embed images into the code. In this example, the embedded logo is too large. The code is not verified, even with the ECC setting to «Best»:

Scaling the logo down a little results in a code that is valid:

  • It can’t detect low contrast color combinations and will verify codes that would likely fail in real life, e.g. light gray dots over a white background.
  • When embedding logos, the verifier can not detect transparency in the image. Even if large parts of the logo were transparent and let the QR code shine through, the reader would not verify the code if it deems the image too large.

It is therefore highly recommended that you test the code with a dedicated scanner app. See next section.

Scanning QR Codes

On iOS you can use the stock camera app which can detect and read QR codes. A far more capable alternative is CoScan, a document and barcode scanner app:

For Android, we recommend the free Google ZXing app. Google ZXing is also available as an online service. This post has tips on scanning QR codes.

Export QR barcode from InDesign

The created QR code is an SVG file that will be listed in the Links panel:

For your convenience, the file has been embedded into the document (note the «Photo» icon in the panel). This is by design so that the document containing the QR code can be easily shared with others which is the typical use case. If you want to export just the barcode from InDesign, right-click the file in the panel and select Unembed link. You are then presented with the option to link to the original file or to a new location. Select «No» and select the desired output folder. The barcode will then be exported, the file name set «qr-######.svg», with the «#######» being a six digit number.

Download

The Softmatic QR Designer for InDesign can be downloaded from the Creative Cloud Marketplace. We also provide barcode extensions for Photoshop and Illustrator, see here.

Will the extension work with InDesign CS5 or CS6?

No. The minimum supported version is InDesign 2021 (V16).

Can I use the extension for data merge?

Right now, the extension is only suitable to create individual barcodes through user interaction, one at a time. That means it is not scriptable. We are currently waiting for Adobe to finalize the new UXP plug-in architecture for ID/AI; once this is available the extension will be accessible via scripting which will allow mass creation of barcodes.

What color spaces are supported?

Currently, only RGB is supported, CMYK color space is not supported. We plan to add support for native InDesign color panels as soon as the UXP plug-in interfaces are available.

Can I return the extension if it does not meet my requirements? What’s your refund policy?

Adobe InDesign CC – QR-

qr-code-indesign

Auto Generate QR Codes with Data Merge in InDesign CC 2014

Generate QR Codes in InDesign Data Merge

The Data Merge function in InDesign is a powerful, versatile tool for integrated marketing. We use it for variable data printing to personalize individual pieces – text and images – and, if a direct mail piece, to address and barcode for delivery to the USPS. The latest enhancement to Data Merge is the ability to integrate automatically generated QR codes into the Data Merge workflow. The best part is InDesign does almost all the work.

5 types of InDesign QR codes

As you may know, InDesign CC will automatically generate a QR code within a document. Choose Object – Generate QR Code. From the Content tab, you can choose which of 5 main classes of QR code information you want to create: Text, Website, Text Message, Email or Business Card/Contact Information. The Color tab will let you change the QR code from standard Black to one of your other Swatch colors. When you click OK, the code loads onto your cursor for placement (or if you already selected a placeholder box, it places itself on the page). It can be resized to any dimension needed and is a high fidelity graphic object – in other words, it behaves just like a vector piece of artwork.

To automatically generated MULTIPLE QR codes through a Data Merge, the key lies in correctly entering the data in your Data Source .csv or .txt file. You will need to create a column (in Excel for example) and – this is the important part – name the column beginning with a hashtag (for example, “#QRcodes“). Within that column you can mix and match any of the 5 types of codes, but the data entries must be in the following formats:

  • For plain text: simple, just enter the text you want to be encoded.
  • For an SMS Text Message: SMSTO:<Phone number>:<Message>Example: SMSTO:8285551919:Call me!
  • For a Website Hyperlink: URL:<url>Example: URL:http://www.imagesmith.com
  • For and Email Message: MATMSG:\nTo:<email address>\nSUB:<subject>;\nBODY:;;<body of email>Example: MATMSG:\nTo:name@gmail.com\nSUB:Your Subject;\nBODY:;;bodyofemail
  • For Contact or Business Card Info: BEGIN:VCARD\nVERSION:2.1\nN:<last name>;<first name>\nFN:<full name>\nORG:<your workplace>\nTITLE:<job title>\nTEL;CELL:<cell number>\nTEL;WORK;VOICE:<voice number>\nADR;WORK:;;<address>;<city>;<state>;<zip>;<country>\nEMAIL;WORK;INTERNET:<email address>\nURL:<website url>\nEND:VCARD

Data Merge Panel in InDesign

Back in InDesign, choose Select Data Source on the Data Merge panel options and then link the .txt or .csv file you created to this document. Draw a box as the placeholder for where you want the QR codes to print on your page. Now link that placeholder to the data by selecting it and then clicking the “qrcodes” field title in the Data Merge panel (the hashtag you put on that column in Excel will not show up in InDesign, but it does allow InDesign to recognize that data as QR code information). Your placeholder will then have a dashed border selection line around it, signifying it will create QR codes when merged.

Finally, merge your document either by choosing “Create Merged Document” (which will give you a multi-page InDesign document) or “Export to PDF” (which creates the finished multi-page PDF file). If your InDesign document is a 2-pager and you have an .txt or .csv file of 100 entries linked, you will create a 200 page PDF file.

One snag: I cannot figure out how to generate QR codes this way in any color other than black. While InDesign lets you choose a color for individual codes you create within the application, I have not been able to find out how to “colorize” the placeholder for the merge in order to generate multiple QR codes through Data Merge that are any color other than black. If you know, please tell us how. If not, then perhaps that ability will come in a future update.
